Transformers for MV Drives and Converter applications

MV Drive and Converter Transformers: The Heart of Modern Industrial Applications In the global Oil & Gas and LNG industries, MV drive transformers—also known as converter transformers—are the backbone of medium-voltage drive and converter systems.

These specialized transformers provide the essential interface between the electric grid and the Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) that control compressors, pumps, and gas turbines in energy-intensive environments. At Specialtrasfo, we specialize in the design and manufacture of custom MV drive and converter transformers for critical industrial processes.

Whether for onshore LNG terminals, offshore platforms, or petrochemical plants and mining our transformers deliver unmatched performance, efficiency, and reliability.

Sectors in which the Converter is applied

Our Expertise

  • Multi-pulse Configurations: up to 36-pulses in a single transformer

  • Multi-Level Topologies: up to 18 independent secondary windings

  • Electrostatic Shield: to ensure superior electrical isolation

  • Tap Changers: Off-circuit for optimized voltage adjustment

  • Cooling Options: ONAN, ONAF, OFWF, OFAF—customizable for project needs

  • Insulating Fluids: mineral oil or less-flammable liquids for hazardous environments

All Specialtrasfo transformers can be fully designed and manufactured in accordance with the following certifications: ATEX, UL, CSA, ABS, IEC EX, GOST, CE, LLOYDS.

We are a trusted partner for major EPCs and OEMs.

The MV drive transformers are engineered specifically to handle the high demands of converter applications, delivering stable, filtered power to VFDs that drive LNG compressors, refinery pumps, and offshore turbine systems.

Specialtrasfo is recognized internationally as a top manufacturer of converter transformers for MV drives, with over 1800 installations worldwide. Our transformers are at the heart of critical Oil & Gas projects in:

• United States (Gulf Coast LNG terminals, shale gas plants)

• North Sea offshore platforms (UK, Norway sectors)

• United Arab Emirates (onshore LNG production, petrochemical complexes)

• Enable precise control of compressor and pump systems for natural gas liquefaction

• Increase energy efficiency in large-scale industrial operations

• Protect sensitive equipment from power surges and harmonics

• Ensure compliance with global standards like IEC, ANSI, API, ATEX

With multi-pulse and multi-secondary configurations, our transformers are ideal for demanding offshore LNG facilities, FLNG (Floating LNG), and onshore gas processing plants.

We manufacture converter transformers for Variable Speed Drives and for Static VAR Compensation systems in the medium voltage range. The most common typology is the three-winding arrangement with delta and wye secondary connections to obtain 12-pulse reaction.

Designed to meet all types of environmental conditions:

  • extreme temperatures, from -50°C to +55°C;
  • altitude, over 4000 m asl;
  • corrosive atmospheres;
  • seismic zones;
  • hazardous areas;
  • marine application for propulsion and distribution.

All cooling system types available, by means of mineral or less-flammable fluids, air or water external cooling mediums, natural or forced circulation.
